How to get Multiple Listings in Google

  • How to get Multiple Listings in GoogleMultiple Listings

I have posted before on this subject, under the heading, How to Get Listed Twice in the Top Ten SERPs.  Google has since changed its search algorithm, and the methods described in that post need to be updated.  Under the old rules we would get a double (indented) listing, with a plus sign to expand that showed four more pages – thus you got the top 6 entries in the SERP.

  • Top Nine Positions

The existing search result algorithm appears to make it even easier to get multiple listings.  A search  today for “Get Listed Twice in the Top Ten SERPs” shows my sites in the top 4 slots, and a plus sign, which when clicked expands to give me the top nine positions. That pushes all but one competitor off the front page – Whoopeeee!  A more competitive search phrase; “How to Write the Perfect Post”; comes in at number 4 position, but still has the next 4 slots, plus the plus sign with 5 more, making a total of 9 SERPs +again.

  • The Formula

To get these multiple listings in Google, you need to do this. Write at least two posts that are optimised for the same keyword, and be sure that they are linked internally.  The content needs to be different, but the subject and the keywords the same. Use a strategy of “Keyword Coherence” to set out your keywords – briefly, use the site keyword in every post, and write supporting posts using all the longtailed keywords, and be sure that they are all interlinked internally.

  • Include Keywords, LTKs, Categories, Titles and Links

Use a specific long tailed keyword for each post, but try to include related LTK’s as well.  In this way you will get Google listing not just for the one page, but several pages because they include the LTKs and links to them too.  Be sure to include the LTKs as tags, as well as in the titles and categories. This is my proven method of how to get mutiple listings in Google

This is good seo practice but maybe it is also a good idea to think about links via web 2.0 by getting backlinks from facebook, youtube, forums and so on which is what Google seems to be more interested in right now … don’t you think?

Certainly in the wider context your comment on backlinks is valid, but it is beyond the scope of this post. You do need to go for backlinks as part of your site SEO strategy.

Thanks for commenting – Rhys ;-)

Now I’m no SEO expert but isn’t it dangerous to get more than one page indexed in the top ten results on Google? I thought that Google strives to only list one page from the same domain a little bit like AdWords?

it’s only dangerous if you own all 10 domains. So you can rank for your own domain, and piggy back on other 9 domains that you don’t own (ie. article directories, web2.0 properties).

      Hi Victoria -

My understanding is that Google strives to list the 10 most relevant pages in order of relevance, and the present search algorithm appears to be quite happy to show multiple listings from one site where they are sufficiently relevant.

I’m certain this strategy probably works, but I just prefer myself to write good content and let things sail from there.

I just feel like, even though this may be allowed now, that it is something Google may punish in the future. (having two posts with the same subject)

    Nice blog and good luck!

      Gidday Jon!

Given that the prime function of the web and SE’s is to provide maximum quality information; then I feel we are more likely to be rewarded than punished by “G” for two, (or more), posts on the same subject!

I only have 1 listing on google. I have heard it could be multiplied but i don’t have any idea how. Now it sound to me a bit complicated. I am not very used to coherence. I guess i have to learn first keyword coherence. But i believe this post is right and helpful. its just that i need something more.

The second listing can improve the traffic received from Google. For what little effort it takes, the tips outlined in this post are certainly worth the effort to get more traffic.

I fail to understand one thing, Dont you think that optimizing the different articles with the same Keywords would lead to a duplicate content issue. Also, How is it going to help us if we have two listings instead of one?

I always feel as though I’ve hit the jackpot when I get more than one page ranking for my chosen keyword – but until I read this post I hadn’t really figured a strategy to do it. I’ll try and do exactly as you’ve said and see if it works for me too.

Surely a good way to get traffic, I’ve used web2.0 before and it was great too. Also this method doesn’t require much effort so it might be a good start for people who are too busy to do much for traffic. Thanks for the article! Great work! :)

I have been noticing that google is doing much more of this. However, they seem to primarily do it with large authority sites, ie. Amazon and the like. I don’t know how easy it is to get your site listed for anything other than the longest of the long tail keywords. I also think that in the long run Google will remove multiple listings as I fee it seriously dilutes the diversity of results.

I agree that it seems to diminish the variety of results to have multiple results for the same site, but Google has been doing it more and more. As a site owner, I am happy about it!

It is certainly a good way to get more traffic to the site. Certainly there will be no easier to accomplish in such a highly competitive areas of this. But I think in areas of very hard-fought, one should rather concentrate on the main page and the stability of the site.

You are right that the core of the site is very important, but it is the extras that bring the mutiple SE listings.
