How to Link to the Home Page

How to Link to the Home Page

Inserting a Link to the Home Page from every post is a valid part of onsite SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) – it is an essential part of Keyword Coherence, the interlinking of your site Keyword with all the  lesser LTK’s (Long tailed keywords) that are the basis of each post.  You do it to give power (link juice) to your site keyword, thus boosting its position in the rankings.  It makes it very plain to the search spiders that this is what your site is all about!

  • Put It In The Footer?

It can be hard to remember to manually insert a home page link, and it is not always easy to find a ‘natural’ looking place to insert this into your post.  So, what to do? Costa  from BloGigs suggests; “The easy, quick and surest way to achieving this is to leave a homepage link in your blog’s footer using the anchor text you want.”  Good theory, but I don’t like this idea very much – mainly because footer links don’t carry much weight.

  • My Solution.

Here is another solution.  Put a line of code on the single.php template, and, as Costa suggested,  insert a homepage link  using the appropriate anchor text; but put it in the body of the post, just before the “Comments”.  Doing this embeds the link in the body of the post, immediately after the end of your writing, but before all the “fluff” that forms the bulk of most comments. The search spiders will apportion quite a lot of weight to the link in this position.

  • How Do I do That?

Goto Dashboard/Appearance/Editor and open “single.php”. Search for this code :

and paste in this code after it:

<p style=”text-align:center;”><a  href=”” title=”Secondary Keywords….”>Anchor Text  includes Main Keyword………</a></p>

This code will insert your home page link after the credits, and directly before the comments.  Of course you will need to edit the code to display your own web-site URL and keywords.

  • Use POST.PHP (Works on Default Theme)

Use POST.PHP instead of doing this with PAGE.PHP and the links will appear on all the indexed single pages, but NOT on the home page where you are showing up to (say) 10 posts on the same page.

  • For 2010 Theme Do This:

Open single.php, search for “<div class=”entry-utility”>, and paste in the above code directly ABOVE it.. (Be sure that the quote marks are vertical, not slanted)

  • Whoopee….  300 Internal Links!
300 Internal Links

300 Internal Links (Pic @

So there you are, the easy way to link to the home page from EVERY post.  Suppose you have 300 posts indexed, now suddenly you will have 300 internal links pointing to your Home Page, and every one with the correct site keyword as the anchor text.

I’m new in SEO and I know the value of dofollow external backlinks, but I don’t fully understand the value of internal links. I thought they are needed only to get indexed faster, but maybe there is some other kind of importance of internal links? And besides, normally we have a link to home page at the top of each post, isn’t it the same?

  3. Rhys says:

Welcome to my Blog. You said; “…normally we have a link to home page at the top of each post”.
If only this were so. It is anything but normal and this is what this post is setting out to encourage!
I understand that the value of internal links is in giving more authority to each key word. It is fundamental to SEO logic that the SEs give more importance to keywords that are linked to, and from, other similiar articles.

  9. I don´t know if I should test this on a big site, because hundreds of links appearing so fast can harm my rankings.

Maybe this technique is more appropriate for small sites, no?

You said; “….hundreds of links appearing so fast can harm my rankings”.

Don’t believe it. I recently put a new link in the footer to a site information (sitemap) page. This has the identical effect as this post, but I cannot believe it will attract a “penalty” just because it is on every page and therefore there are many of them. On the contrary, this is good site SEO as recommended by Google.

I agree that it helps to link to the homepage from each page of your site. I have a link in my header and footer so I don’t think I’ll be adding an extra one into content. Do you think these links carry as much value?

  12. Rhys says:

    @Clare –
No, I do not think links in the footer carry any real value. The accepted wisdom is that the FIRST link in the post carries the top weight.

BTW – The link in the header is usually to the site, not the specific Home Page.

I don’t really agree with you here. Internal backlinks are important but you do have to keep things natural. Vary the anchor and the link placement a lot. Also insert your links in your article and you’ll see added benefits 🙂

Rhys, I will definitely have to try this out, especially after reading how your website jumped from PR2 to PR3 after adding these internal links. I’ve been stuck at PR1 at seemingly forever, I hope this will take me to the next level.

I don’t think the people here who are concerned about linking within their own site have to worry. Lots of internal linking is a good thing, and I don’t think that linking within your own site raises any flags with the search engines. Thanks for the detailed .php code. I have not done hardly any linking within, even though I know I need to do it. Cool that it actually raised your pagerank! Now this is just nit picky, but before I read any of your posts, I looked over the page, and having the “How to Monetize Your Site” right before the comments confused me a little. I will play around with maybe adding a “Comment” header as well so that it’s clear on my pages.

  24. Can you please explain how internal linking in the body got any effect for SE rank ? What about link in the menu ? isn’t it the same, internal linking to homepage from every page ?

Visiting other blog sites by searching them in Market Samurai software and do some good comments and leave external links is the best way to earn more traffic that in internal links. But taking some time to build internal links is a good thing too. Let’s say… make 20 external links per day and 5 internal links in your blog posts. It will work out ok I think. What do you say Rhys?

Actually what I’ve done on my personal site is have it placed on the footer. I can’t say that it hasn’t done any good to me but I’m not satisfied with the result. Placing it before the comment box seems to be a good idea. Thank you so much for this idea.

  33. I love this tip. So simple but so effective! And this is considered “legal” by Google standards, is it? I also put the links in the text and images but I like how this is sort of an automated way of doing that!

Thanks for the tip. I knew this until now not yet. But there again you can see the WordPress simply endless and can be extended arbitrarily. This is also good I think of WordPress. But I do not like to play around on the code of WordPress. Maybe you could turn it into a small plug-in? So which one will not have to go with the code.
